UL94 is published by Underwriters Laboratories and grades how a plastic material behaves when exposed to a small flame. It is frequently quoted on protective case datasheets, and just as frequently misunderstood — because it rates a moulded specimen of a defined thickness, not a finished case.

The Grades, From Least to Most Stringent

Two vertical grades differ in a way that matters in the real world: whether burning droplets are allowed to ignite a cotton indicator placed underneath. In an enclosure sitting above equipment, dripping is not a laboratory detail.

Why Thickness Is Part of the Rating

A UL94 classification is only valid for the thickness at which the specimen was tested. The same resin can achieve a better classification on a thicker section, because more material has to heat up and there is more mass to carry heat away from the flame.

This has a direct consequence for cases. A shell has thin areas — ribs, latch bosses, corners, wall transitions — and those are not the same thickness as the flat panel where a datasheet figure was likely taken. Asking for the rating without the thickness is asking an incomplete question.

What UL94 Does Not Tell You

  • Not a whole-case test. A case is an assembly of shell, gasket, foam, latches and hardware. The rating describes the resin, not the assembly.
  • Not a fire-resistance rating. It measures reaction to a small flame for a short time, not performance in a developed fire.
  • Not a smoke or toxicity assessment. Smoke density and toxic combustion products are separate evaluations.
  • Not a guarantee for other colours. Pigments and additive packages can shift behaviour, so a rating on a natural or black grade does not automatically cover every colour.

When Flame Retardancy Actually Matters

Specify a flame-retardant grade when the case lives near ignition sources or inside regulated equipment: avionics bays and flight cases, railway and vehicle installations, battery transport enclosures, electrical and utility service kits, and any deployment where an internal standard or customer code names UL94 explicitly.

Where the case simply carries tools through normal industrial or outdoor use, flame retardancy is usually not the property that decides service life — impact behaviour, UV stability and chemical resistance tend to matter more, and flame-retardant grades can trade some of those away.

What to Request From a Supplier

  • The grade and the thickness it was tested at (for example V-0 at a stated millimetre value).
  • The recognition documentation for the specific resin, ideally with the file number.
  • Confirmation that the colour and production grade you are buying is the one covered.
  • Clarity on whether the interior foam is also flame retardant — a V-0 shell with ordinary foam is only half a specification.
