1. Glue failure or missing groove
Half the people who find a case gasket detached reach for adhesive, the other half order a new strip, and the glued one peels again at the same corner a year later. What failed is rarely the adhesive itself but the layer between it and the lid: mould release, oil, moisture, or a flat mouth that never had a groove.
Read the failure form first. An even release around the perimeter, adhesive left on the lid, is a bonding failure. Lifting only at the corners, still stuck between, is local peel at a load point. A strip that slides out in one piece was pulled from a groove, which is no adhesive problem.
The residue decides the repair. A glossy, slippery adhesive back means mould release was left on the surface. An adhesive torn into fibres means surface energy is too low. A chalky white layer that rubs to powder means the strip went on below 10 ℃ and never filmed over.
| Failure form | Residue | Call | Action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Even release all round | Full adhesive layer on lid | Surface not prepared | Clean, then groove or re-stick |
| Corners lifting | Adhesive drawn into threads | Corner stress | Re-glue and press corners |
| Strip slid out whole | No adhesive in channel | Groove pull-out | Reseat and press |
| Patchy along the length | Powdery adhesive | Applied cold | Re-stick above 15 ℃ |
Flat-mouth cases make up more than half of used-case repairs: no groove, so adhesive is the only route.
2. 0.8 mm of adhesive against a 2.0 mm groove
The adhesive tape is 0.8 mm; the groove is 2.0 mm deep. The 1.2 mm difference is not a dimension game: adhesive holds the strip by shear in the glue line, a groove holds it by wrapping the walls around it, one bonds and one clamps. A gasket that keeps coming off is usually being bonded where it needs clamping.
Measured bond strength is 12 N/cm against 35 N/cm of retention in a groove, close to three times. At room temperature the gap hides, because 12 N/cm already holds an 8 mm strip; at −20 ℃ the adhesive hardens and its modulus rises, bond strength falls to 4 N/cm, and groove retention is still 28 N/cm.
The two structures also demand different lids. Adhesive needs a flat face at Ra 1.6 μm or better, clean and dry. A groove needs ±0.15 mm of width tolerance, 2.0 mm of depth and an unbroken channel through the corners.
The extra 1.2 mm of depth gives the strip somewhere to retreat: under load it moves into the groove and springs back inside it. Adhesive has no such retreat, so the pressure lands on the glue line and the strip creeps outward once the adhesive softens.
| Indicator | Adhesive | Groove | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Structure depth | 0.8 mm | 2.0 mm | +1.2 mm |
| Retention at 25 ℃ | 12 N/cm | 35 N/cm | +23 N/cm |
| Retention at −20 ℃ | 4 N/cm | 28 N/cm | +24 N/cm |
| Service life | 2 years | 5 years | +3 years |
| Strip cost | Baseline | +6 yuan | 6 yuan |
| Fitting time | 15 min | 15 min | 0 |
Adhesive carries a hidden cost in rework. Re-gluing takes 15 min and a groove strip takes 15 min, but the first happens twice a year and the second once in five years, so the labour gap shows by year three.
3. Below −20 ℃ the adhesive lets go
−20 ℃ is the dividing line. The same strip reads 12 N/cm at 25 ℃ and 4 N/cm when measured straight out of a cold chamber after 4 h, while a groove goes from 35 N/cm to 28 N/cm. Cold does not change the geometry of a groove, only the modulus of the adhesive, which is why a case gasket detached clusters in winter.
Take the cold number properly: a −20 ℃ chamber, a 4 h hold, and the pull finished within 30 s of opening the door.
Only three surface causes exist, and all can be measured. Mould release shows on a dyne pen, and below 34 mN/m nothing will stick. A pen drawn in several places that shrinks its line marks an unprepared surface. Adhesive applied under 10 ℃ never films and tears off as powder.
Wiping the face once beats buying a stronger adhesive. Two passes of isopropanol, 5 min to flash off, and the bond returns above 10 N/cm; skip it and the same strip manages 6 N/cm and lifts within two months.
A groove is not fit-and-forget either, because it has two preconditions. Width tolerance is ±0.15 mm, since a wide channel lets the strip wander and a narrow one will not take it. The channel must also run unbroken through the corners, where moulding short-shots appear first, and a break in the corner is a corner with no retention.
4. Fifteen minutes to fit, two groove conditions
Fifteen minutes has an order: 3 min to lift the old strip, 4 min to scrape the adhesive, 3 min to clean the face, 3 min to press the new strip, 2 min to close and check. The scraping cannot be shortened, since residual adhesive over 0.1 mm keeps the new strip from seating.
Press a groove strip from the corner outward with a roller along the channel for even pressure. Press an adhesive strip with a 30 N roller, twice over the corners, and leave the lid open for 24 h.
A hybrid works where corners keep lifting: seat the strip, add four adhesive dabs at the corners, and accept 22 min at the next change instead of 15.
| Service condition | Adhesive | Groove | Choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indoor, small annual swing | 2 years | 5 years | Groove, cheaper over time |
| Repeated −20 ℃ cycles | 4 N/cm, lifts | 28 N/cm | Groove |
| Flat mouth, old case repair | 15 min to fit | Needs machining | Adhesive as a stopgap |
| Many corners, oval mouth | Corners lift | Needs continuous channel | Groove plus corner dabs |
| Over 2000 strips a year | 3 yuan a year | 1.2 yuan a year | Groove |
Two shop-floor habits drive repeat work: tape wrapped around the mouth holds under 5 N/cm and slides on the first close, and a strip stretched during fitting ends up 10 mm long and lifts at both ends once it shrinks. About 30% of rework starts there.
Conclusion
A case gasket detached looks like an adhesive problem and measures as a division of labour. Adhesive at 0.8 mm and 12 N/cm works by chemistry; a groove at 2.0 mm and 35 N/cm works by geometry. At −20 ℃ the gap opens to seven times, 4 N/cm against 28 N/cm, and that is why strips come off in winter. Choose on four indicators only: depth, room-temperature retention, cold retention and service life. Indoors, on a flat mouth, in a hurry, 15 min of adhesive will do; with a wide annual swing, a five-year target and many corners, fit a groove with corner dabs, 6 yuan more per strip and 1.2 yuan a year once spread. Test surface energy before gluing, treat anything under 34 mN/m, and the second failure at the same corner stops happening.
