Quick answer: A gun case quote shows one number and hides four: tooling amortisation, packing and freight, inspection and rework, and the cost of payment terms. On 800 units the cheapest line can land fifty thousand yuan above the dearest.

1. Why the Lowest Gun Case Quote Rarely Wins
The usual move at quotation stage is to line five prices up and sign the smallest. That move skips the judgement, and it skips the warning signs with it.
A gun case unit price carries three things: material, moulding, hardware. Four other costs sit outside it and arrive within a quarter — tooling, packing and freight, inspection and rework, and the money locked into payment terms.
| Quote | Unit price | Not included | Real spend at 800 units |
|---|---|---|---|
| A | 118 yuan | 68,000 tool, billed separately | 162,400 yuan |
| B | 132 yuan | Tool included, cartons only | 105,600 plus 2,400 |
| C | 126 yuan | Tool split, freight collect | 134,800 yuan |
| D | 141 yuan | Tool, pallets and inspection included | 112,800 yuan |
Put the totals side by side and the cheapest rate ends up nearly fifty thousand yuan above the dearest. Labour is not the gap. A 68,000 yuan tool spread over 800 units is, at 85 yuan on every case.
Packing comes second. Cartons at 3 yuan, pallets at 60, twenty-four cases to a pallet, so 2.5 yuan apiece; a 40HQ holds 480 and the sea leg runs 26 days, with trucking and clearance on top. Inspection comes third: 1,200 yuan per auditor-day at 500 units a day, two days across 800 units, 3 yuan a case, while a rework order lands entirely on your side of the ledger. Payment terms are the fourth and quietest: 60 days costs 1.2 percent more than 30, roughly 14.6 percent annualised.
2. Three Order Lines: Stock Tool, Modified Tool, New Tool
Order quantity is not a threshold. It is three capacity lines, and crossing one changes who pays.
- Under 200 units: stock tool, colour and print only, 8 percent premium, 15 days.
- 200 to 800 units: modified core or new liner, 14,000 yuan, deductible from the invoice, 25 days.
- Over 800 units: new steel tool at 68,000 yuan, about 50,000 shots of life, so 85 yuan per case at 800 units and 23 at 3,000.
Ask which line the factory sits on, not what its minimum is. A plant with two presses subcontracts a 3,000-unit order, and then neither the lead time nor the quality is its own.
A minimum can be negotiated. Capacity cannot.
3. Who Owns the Tool
Who pays for the tool decides what leaving costs in three years.
- Buyer pays, buyer owns: dearest and cleanest, the tool leaves without anyone's permission.
- Amortised into the price, supplier owns: lowest rate, nothing recoverable.
- Split cost, shared title: fastest signature, messiest exit.
Four clauses belong in the contract: tool number and drawing revision, storage location, trigger for removal, maintenance duty. The trigger has to fire by itself — two shipments late beyond 10 days, or an MA rate above 3 percent.
Stamp the number on the tool frame, not in the annex. A stamped tool can be found in an audit; an unstamped one is a claim.
4. Lead Time and Payment Terms as Triggers
Delivery promises come in three grades, and they are nowhere near each other.
| Wording | Typical phrase | Enforceable |
|---|---|---|
| Vague | Ships in about 35 days | No |
| Staged | Sample 7 days, tool 12, production 16 | Stage by stage |
| Penalty | 0.5 percent per late day, capped at 5 | Yes, deduct |
A staged promise earns its keep because every stage can be checked. No sample on day seven points at the drawing; no tool on day nineteen points at the toolroom queue; no production on day thirty-five points at resin or labour.
Payment terms are a price line in disguise. A supplier demanding a hundred percent upfront is not short of cash. It is short of confidence.
5. What the Quote Leaves Out
The last line of most quotes reads other charges to be advised, and those five words can eat 8 percent of the budget.
- Samples: 1,800 yuan a set, 1,200 returned on an 800-unit order.
- Cartons: 3 yuan each, five-ply for export, 1.2 more.
- Pallets: 60 yuan, 24 cases each, 2.5 per case, fumigation 15 more.
- Freight: 480 cases in a 40HQ, 26 days at sea, trucking and clearance on arrival.
- Re-sampling: 800 yuan from the third round, seldom mentioned upfront.
Send that list out with the enquiry and make each supplier fill it in. A blank line is not free. It is unsettled.
Conclusion
A gun case purchase is not a price comparison. It is four accounts added up: how the tool is amortised, who carries packing and freight, who absorbs inspection and rework, and what the payment term is worth. Line those up in one table and every quote speaks the same language. Treat the unit price as the whole story and the difference gets collected after signature, which is the quiet way a gun case order turns expensive.
