Quick answer: Price gaps on a multi-purpose outdoor case sit in four breakable blocks: resin and machine time, tooling amortisation, hardware and foam, packing and inspection. Settle MOQ, tool ownership, dated milestones and terms first, then compare unit price.

1. Where a 38 percent spread really comes from
Last November a Ningbo distributor sent one 2D drawing to seven plants and got quotes from 128 to 177 yuan, a 38 percent gap. The drawing had not changed. The way each quote was broken up had.
A shell with a 4.0 mm wall weighs 2.6 kg, and modified polypropylene runs 11.4 yuan per kilogram. Lifting regrind from 15 to 30 percent saves 2.1 yuan a unit, which is why a resin line written as settled against actuals never falls.
| Block | Typical share | Figure to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Resin and machine | 46% | 2.6 kg part, 800 tonne press, 240 second cycle |
| Tooling | 9% | 86,000 yuan tool over 3,000 units |
| Hardware and foam | 28% | 2 latches, EVA at 38 kg/m³ |
| Packing and audit | 17% | 5-ply carton, 3 inspection days |
One 86,000 yuan tool spread over 3,000 units costs 28.7 yuan a case; spread over 1,000 it costs 86. That 57 yuan gap never shows on the page.
2. MOQ and tooling ownership come first
MOQ is three numbers: the smallest economic shot, the hardware purchasing lot, the carton print run. The body moulds in one shot on an 800 tonne press, and 12 shots of start-up scrap equals 30 pieces, so 300 units is honest. Room to talk sits lower down: latches ship 5,000 a box, cartons start at 500.
Tool ownership belongs on page one. Pay 86,000 yuan and the tool, its steel stamp number and drawings are yours, stored at the plant. Let the plant pay and unit price carries 18 yuan of amortisation, but the mould may not move elsewhere.
| Clause | Buyer pays | Plant pays |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership | Buyer, with stamp and drawings | Plant |
| Unit price | 168 yuan | 186 yuan, 18 yuan amortisation |
| If orders stop | Recoverable after 12 months | Buy-out at 86,000 yuan |
The stop-order clause is missed most often. When volumes halve in year two, the tool sits in someone else's workshop, impossible to collect.
3. Split delivery into five dated milestones
Tool making takes 18 days, trials 4, moulding 9, assembly 6, inspection and loading 3: 40 days. A quote of 45 adds buffer, not capacity.
| Milestone | Standard days | Usual delay |
|---|---|---|
| Tool and trials | 22 | Steel arrives 5 days late |
| Moulding | 9 | Colour master off-batch, 2 days rework |
| Assembly | 6 | Latches held at sea |
| Inspection and loading | 3 | Rework after a failed audit |
Nine delays in ten land on the first milestone. Tool steel needs 12 days from order to gate while plants schedule on 8, so put the steel arrival date on its own line.
Loading hides inside lead time too: a 40 foot high cube takes 320 cases, a 20 foot takes 150, and waiting for a full load can outlast production.
4. Three sample rounds and one factory audit
Round one is a 7 day hand sample for shape and lid fit. Round two is a 12 day steel tool sample for wall thickness and sink marks. Round three is a 5 day pre-production sample for colour and hardware. All three pass before bulk release.
An audit needs press tonnage and clamp force, resin lot labels, and a salt spray chamber. Call for 96 hours of neutral salt spray and a plant equipped for 48 will borrow a report; the equipment plate number settles it.
Ask who keeps the colour standard: a 60 mm master plaque held by the buyer halves the argument at batch three.
5. Payment terms set the floor price
At a funding cost of 8 percent a year, 60 day terms give away 1.3 points of unit price, so 162 and 176 yuan can both be fair for one drawing.
| Settlement | Deposit | Unit price | Fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paid upfront | 100% | 162 yuan | First order |
| Balance on bill of lading | 30% | 168 yuan | 300 units and up |
| 30 day terms | 30% | 172 yuan | Annual framework |
| 60 day terms | 20% | 176 yuan | 3,000 units a year |
A low deposit is no bargain: a 20 percent deposit quote usually hides a risk premium, and the total comes out worse.
6. Six add-on charges to close in the contract
A clean quotation can still grow fees once the contract is drafted.
- Colour: a Pantone match adds 3 yuan a unit; write no extra charge.
- Printing: one colour at 1.2 yuan a unit, plus 600 yuan for the screen.
- Foam: EVA at 38 and 45 kg/m³ differs by 9 yuan, so lock the density, not the price.
- Carton marks: a revised print run costs 300 yuan, so fix artwork early.
- Inspection: third-party visits run 1,200 yuan each; name who pays and how many.
- Tool changes: a new rib starts at 2,000 yuan; write that non-structural changes are free.
Together they add about 15 yuan, close to 9 percent. Of the 38 percent spread, 29 points come from structure and the last 9 from clauses like these.
Conclusion
Break the quotation into four blocks, put tool ownership on page one, cut lead time into five dated milestones, and the spread on one drawing closes from 38 percent to under 9. Sourcing a multi-purpose outdoor case is not short of suppliers; it is short of a comparison sheet that lines up line by line.
