1. The First Line: 57 Days of Use
Sixty days of use a year, three years of rent at 21,900 RMB, five bought cases at 3,400 RMB. The figures differ 6.4 times while the unit price barely doubles: 680 RMB to buy, 12 RMB a day to rent. The gap is idle time — purchase spreads over 365 days, rental over the days used.
Divide 680 by 12 and you get 56.7 days, rounded to 57: under it rent wins, past it buying does. At 60 days a year, day 57 lands in month 11, so the purchase catches up inside the first year.
| Days a year | Over 3 years | Buy per day | Rent nominal | Rent actual | Gap |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 | 90 days | 7.56 RMB | 12 RMB | 24.3 RMB | 3.2× |
| 60 | 180 days | 3.78 RMB | 12 RMB | 24.3 RMB | 6.4× |
| 120 | 360 days | 1.89 RMB | 12 RMB | 24.3 RMB | 12.9× |
| 180 | 540 days | 1.26 RMB | 12 RMB | 24.3 RMB | 19.3× |
| 250 | 750 days | 0.91 RMB | 12 RMB | 24.3 RMB | 26.8× |
The last column is where any comparison has to sit. A nominal 12 RMB holds only when one rented day equals one used day, and the contract bills by the month, so the real figure per used day is 24.3 RMB.
Amortisation matters too. Three years treats the case as a consumable; at five years the cost falls to 2.27 RMB a day. Resale returns part: five sold at 45% of new after three years bring 1,530 RMB, leaving 1,870 RMB net. Rent has no residual — 21,900 RMB is gone.
2. Rent Is Billed in Days, Not Used in Days
The 12 RMB rate is nominal: contracts open by the month, bill 30 days minimum, and each project carries about 15 days of transit at both ends inside the period. Thirty days of use is billed as 60.
Rebuild the number: 5 units × 120 billed days × 3 years × 12 RMB = 21,600 RMB, plus 300 RMB for six return trips, gives 21,900 RMB. Real use is 900 unit-days (5 × 60 × 3), and 21,900 divided by 900 is 24.3 RMB — the rate a buy vs rent case calculation must use.
| Line | Buying 5 | Renting 5, 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front cash | 3,400 RMB | 2,000 RMB deposit |
| 3-year cash out | 3,400 RMB | 21,900 RMB |
| Billed unit-days | None | 1,800 |
| Used unit-days | 900 | 900 |
| Cost per unit-day | 3.78 RMB | 24.3 RMB |
| Cleaning | Own, 30 RMB a year | Included |
| Floor space | 0.22 m² | None |
| Damage | Own | 30% of new price |
The billed-to-used ratio of 2 is why 12 RMB becomes 24.3 RMB. It is not fixed: a long project thins the transit days toward 1, a short one worsens it. A 5-day job rented by the day has a ratio of 1 — only then is 12 RMB the true rate.
3. Deposit, Damage Share and Floor Space
The 2,000 RMB deposit is tied-up money, not a cost. Billed 120 days a year, the occupation is 657 RMB, about 33 RMB a year at 5%, or 99 RMB over three years. It also waits 30 days for a refund.
Damage settles at 30% of new: 204 RMB a case, 17 days of rent. Three damaged units a year cost 612 RMB, 8.5% of the 7,200 RMB annual rent. The assessment belongs to the lessor; the argument never enters the 21,900 RMB.
Buying spreads its costs thinner. Five stacked cases take 0.22 m², 106 RMB a year at 40 RMB/m². Cleaning runs 15 min per case per trip, twice a year — 2.5 h, or 150 RMB at 60 RMB/h. A gasket set every three years adds 18 RMB. Over three years: 318 RMB of space, 450 RMB of cleaning, 18 RMB of parts, 786 RMB in all.
Add it up: 3,400 plus 786 is 4,186 RMB over 900 unit-days, 4.65 RMB. Rent stays at 24.3 RMB. The gap narrows from 6.4 to 5.2 times without changing direction.
Cleaning inside the rent needs its own line. Fifteen minutes at 60 RMB/h is 15 RMB, and five cases twice a year is 450 RMB over three years. Self-cleaning takes the same time: the money moves from rent to labour. Capital cost is smaller — 510 RMB up front against 548 RMB of annual rent.
4. Real Cost at 40% Idle
Five cases used 60 days a year usually mean three go out and two stay on the shelf — 40% idle. On effective unit-days, 3 × 60 × 3 = 540, the 4,186 RMB becomes 7.75 RMB, 67% above the five-case figure.
Price the idle units and it climbs again: two cases hold 1,360 RMB for three years, about 204 RMB of interest at 5%, plus 130 RMB of space, so 334 RMB over 540 unit-days adds 0.62 RMB — 8.37 RMB all in, still under a third of 24.3 RMB.
Reaching the nominal 12 RMB takes a drop in effective days from 180 to 56.7 — 68.5% idle. The buy vs rent case boundary sits later than intuition suggests.
| Curve | Days a year | Billing | Cost per unit | Call |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Routine rotation | 60 | Monthly, 120 billed days | 4.65 buy / 24.3 rent | Buy |
| Peak gap | 5 × 2 trips | Daily, 10 days | 680 buy / 120 rent | Rent |
| One-off project | 3, no reuse | Daily, 3 days | 680 buy / 36 rent | Rent |
Routine rotation buys. The peak gap rents: a team owning five cases and needing ten twice a year would spend 3,400 RMB on five that work 10 days a year, against 600 RMB of rent — 5.7 years to break even. A one-off 3-day job rents, because 36 RMB against 680 RMB leaves nothing to argue about.
Conclusion
Put the decision on two axes: days of use a year, and cost per unit-day. The point at 60 days and 3.78 RMB sits in the buy zone; the point at 10 days and 60 RMB sits in the rent zone; the line between them is the 57-day payback point. Three steps settle it. Count days a year, multiply by projects, then by three for the lifetime figure, and compare with 57. Buy the days above the line, rent the days below, and pull the peak gap out as a separate daily rental. On these prices, five routine cases cost 4,186 RMB to own and 21,900 RMB to rent over three years — 17,714 RMB that would pay for 29 peak rentals of five cases each.
