1. Two routes for one 60 mm hole
One 60 mm hole, two routes: CNC milling holds the bore at ±0.05 mm and the centre at ±0.03 mm; CO2 laser cutting lands at ±0.20 mm and ±0.10 mm. Pricing runs the other way, 12 yuan against 6 yuan per part.
Most of the 0.15 mm is process, not machine. Milling walks a Ø6 mm cutter at 12000 r/min and 800 mm/min with 0.02 mm of wall deflection; the laser burns at 1200 mm/min and loses 12 % of its energy density across a 1.5 mm depth of focus.
Position error comes from workholding: milling repeats to 0.02 mm on a vacuum chuck, a laser indexes against four stops that need 0.1 mm clearance, adding 0.10 mm.
| Item | CNC milling | CO2 laser |
|---|---|---|
| Bore tolerance mm | ±0.05 | ±0.20 |
| Hole centre mm | ±0.03 | ±0.10 |
| Kerf width mm | 6.00 (tool) | 0.18–0.30 |
| Taper per side mm | 0.02 | 0.06 |
| Minimum hole mm | 1.5 | 0.8 |
| Heat-affected zone mm | 0 | 0.15–1.8 |
| Burr mm | 0.05 | 0.10 dross |
| Price per part, yuan | 12 | 6 |
The last row holds only for one piece and one hole; section 4 replaces it with a curve.
2. Cut quality: 0.06 mm taper and 1.8 mm heat
A 0.06 mm taper per side across a 3 mm wall is not free. The entry grows and the exit shrinks, so an O-ring catches its lip going in and cannot seat coming out.
Heat is a laser-only cost: ABS yellows within 0.8 mm of the cut at ΔE 3.5, and a strip beside the hole falls from 42 MPa to 36 MPa once the discoloured depth passes 0.4 mm. Nitrogen at 0.3 MPa pulls char to 0.4 mm and ΔE to 1.2, at 7.1 yuan a hole.
PP behaves differently: at 165 ℃ it leaves a 0.1 mm sagging dross. Milling PP needs 8000 r/min with a two-flute cutter and 1.5 mm per pass, so chips flake off instead of smearing.
Milling has no heat-affected zone and pays in burrs: 0.05 mm on a 3 mm ABS wall, 40 s to break by hand. Laser dross is 0.10 mm, 25 s with a scraper, but the hardened rim stays.
The rule is short: holes carrying cable, a grommet or a seal go to milling, and holes that vent or drain take the laser.
3. Chips and fume: 45 g/h against 0.1 μm
Milling throws 0.2–0.5 mm chips and fines at 45 g/h. Laser fume runs 0.1–0.3 μm at 12 g/h, fine enough to reach the alveoli, so the two extractions are not interchangeable.
Milling is sized for chips: 1200 m³/h at the enclosure, cyclone then bag filter, cutting dust from 8 mg/m³ to 1.2. Laser needs HEPA H13 plus carbon at 800 m³/h; short airflow leaves a 0.02 mm oil film.
| Item | CNC milling | CO2 laser |
|---|---|---|
| Waste form | 0.2–0.5 mm chips | 0.1–0.3 μm fume |
| Generation rate g/h | 45 | 12 |
| Extraction m³/h | 1200 | 800 |
| Filtration | Cyclone + bag | HEPA H13 + carbon |
| Shop level, no extraction | 8 mg/m³ dust | 5 mg/m³ fume |
| Noise dB(A) | 78 | 62 |
Styrene in ABS fume measures 2–8 mg/m³, so the shop needs −5 Pa to keep it off the line. Noise runs the other way, 78 dB(A) against 62.
4. Cost: the crossover between 1 and 500 pieces
At one piece, set-up dominates: 6 yuan on the laser, 12 on the mill. At 50 pieces, six parts per clamp brings milling to 9.4 yuan. At 500 pieces with four holes, a 6 min clamp reaches 5.8 while the laser climbs to 9.2.
The crossover sits near 300 pieces. One hole at 190 mm of perimeter crosses at 260; four holes at 600 mm total cross at 140.
Tooling counts too: a laser program change takes 0 s, a new milled hole position needs an 800 yuan jig.
| Batch, pcs | Laser, yuan | Milling, yuan | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 6.0 | 12.0 | +6.0 |
| 50 | 6.0 | 9.4 | +3.4 |
| 300 | 7.8 | 6.4 | −1.4 |
| 500 | 9.2 | 5.8 | −3.4 |
Rework is missing from that table. A hole cut 0.15 mm off is scrapped, at 2 % measured; a milled hole opens 0.2 mm and takes a grommet at 0.5 % rework.
5. Hole edge to seal groove: the 8 mm margin
Hole edge to the outside of the seal groove needs 8 mm; below 6 mm on a 3 mm wall, clamping thins the groove and a 1 m, 30 min immersion check leaks there first. A laser rim also creeps, thinning from 0.10 mm to 0.06 mm after 72 h at 60 ℃.
Three callouts settle the route: hole centre to groove edge, a 0.5 × 45° chamfer, and 0.05 mm maximum burr. Add 0.2 mm of hole-face flatness and the supplier has little room to choose for you.
Conclusion
Two coordinates decide the route: batch size and tolerance band. If a bore must hold ±0.05 mm with a seal inside it, pay 12 yuan for milling and buy 0.15 mm of certainty plus a cold, unbrowned edge. If ±0.20 mm is enough and the hole only vents or drains, pay 6 yuan and change programs in zero seconds. The 300-piece line is not fixed: four-hole parts cross at 140, single-hole parts at 260, and an 800 yuan fixture moves both numbers. Before releasing the order, have five pieces cut each way and measure bore, taper and burr; once those three readings are on paper, the process argument is over and the price table can be signed against a fixed route.
