Quick answer: A 2.3x spread on the same drawing rarely comes from shell weight. It comes from three choices: whether conductive coating is priced by area or by case, whether gasket and pressure valve are listed separately, and whether credit terms are folded into the unit price. Put the loading list, shielding level and annual volume on one page, and the quotes converge.

1. Four figures to fix before you enquire

Leave one line off the enquiry and the quote tilts. Disputes over a communication equipment case are rarely about the unit price but about four figures nobody wrote down: cavity size, loading list, shielding, and volume.

The usual line is "make it to this outline and give me an idea", which comes back costed on the most economical reading; when the sample arrives with an antenna bay 15 mm shallow, the tooling change is a fresh negotiation.

FigureHow to write itWhat happens if you leave it out
Cavity size520×380×220 mm, smallest of rim, waist and floorsupplier works back from the outline, cable drums will not fit
Loading list2 radios, 4 whip antennas, 30 m of feeder, 6 battery packscompartments guessed, foam set remade
Shieldingconductive coating inside, surface resistance below 10⁵ Ωquoted as a plain case, 55 CNY a unit added later
Volume1800 a year, 150 per run, twelve runsMOQ quoted at 500, no room to negotiate

Take the smallest of three because draft angle makes the rim 2 to 3 mm wider than the floor; foam cut to the rim figure rattles.

2. What 150 units really buys

At 150 units the mould base is usually borrowed. A communication equipment case is large and deep, so a new single-cavity tool runs around 68000 CNY: 453 CNY a case over 150 units, 7.6 CNY over 9000. Same cavity, sixty times apart.

There are five ways to bring tooling down on a small run:

  • borrow a mould base and cut only cavity and core inserts, saving forty percent
  • drop to one cavity: the tool costs a third less, the unit price rises twelve percent
  • keep the existing shell and change only the insert and dividers, cutting lead time to 22 days
  • change colour per batch with a purge, 2600 CNY from dark green to sand including purging
  • prove the fit with a 3D-printed shell before the tool is cut, so the foam drawing is settled early

The third is most often overlooked. Reusing a shell saves tooling and 20 days; in exchange the handle and valve hole are fixed, so the antenna bay is squeezed into the cavity.

3. Who owns the tool, how long it lasts, what a revision costs

"Tooling belongs to the buyer" is a headline, not a clause. The cavity is designed for 200000 shots, but 1800 cases a year over five years is 9000, so 68000 CNY spreads over 9000 units at 7.6 CNY, not over 200000 at 0.34.

Three numbers belong in the contract.

  • Tool life: 200000 shots, after which the cavity is repolished and vents recut
  • Texture passes: three at most on one cavity, each removing about 0.02 mm
  • Revision cost: an added antenna bay as an insert change, 9000 CNY including two trials

The third becomes an argument six months later. Antennas go from four to six, a divider is added, and 15000 CNY for the change is not unreasonable: strip the cavity, weld, re-texture, trial again. Agree the revision price at signature, and note where the tool sits, because a third-party toolroom adds two days of transport to every trial.

4. Six quote lines where the money hides

Break a communication equipment case quote into lines and the vague parts announce themselves.

Same 200 units, same drawing, three quotes: 480, 620 and 735 CNY. The first priced coating flat at 30 CNY a case, when 62 dm² at 0.9 CNY/dm² is 55.8. The second included coating but not the gasket. The third carried coating, 2.6 m of gasket, the valve, an export crate and 90-day credit. The gap is not efficiency; it is which stretch of the job was quoted.

LineUnitUsual vague wordingHow to check
Shell mouldingper caseone price, no shot weightask for grams per case and the PP grade, check the cycle on a 530-tonne press
Conductive coatingdm²flat rate per caseask for the internal area, verify at 0.9 CNY/dm²
Gasketmetre"shielding included"list metres and price, 12 CNY a metre, about 2.6 m a case
Pressure valveeachbundled with the shelllist at 8 CNY, state whether the membrane is included
Colour changeper batch"any colour"write the 2600 CNY purge and the minimum batch
Export packingper case"packing included"ISPM15 crate at 45 CNY, or five-layer corrugated

Coating deserves the closest look: three passes of 0.06 mm paint against two can differ by an order of magnitude in surface resistance, invisible until the equipment is powered up.

5. 38 days of lead time and 90 days of credit

38 days is four stages plus one round of tool modification in reserve, not a figure pulled from the air.

StageDaysCan it be compressed
Tool cutting and closing15to 8 by borrowing an existing mould base
Trials and modification5four trials included, 1000 CNY each from the fifth
Moulding12530-tonne press, 110-second cycle, about 260 cases a day
Coating, assembly, packing6the 24-hour coating cure does not move

The 12 days assumes 150 units. Run 500 on the same press and moulding stretches to 20 days, so the order grows by only 8. Splitting a small order costs more because the fixed stretch is no longer shared.

Credit is the other half. Thirty percent deposit, seventy against the bill of lading copy is the export standard; thirty, sixty against the copy and ten after inspection adds 1.5 percent; ninety days adds about 2.4 percent, which on a 620 CNY case is 15 CNY.

Negotiate credit and inspection together. The ten percent held until arrival only bites if arrival is where you inspect.

Conclusion

What a buyer negotiates on a communication equipment case is not the number but the three things behind it: the base the tool is spread over, the area coating is measured by, and the points folded into credit. Written as four figures and six lines, a 2.3x spread closes to under ten percent.
