Quick answer: Four situations argue against buying one: a single shipment, a 1.6 m long item, fewer than 20 trips a year, and a cleanroom above ISO 7. Below are the figures that decide it, including a 38000 CNY tooling bill and the point where steel and plastic cost the same.

1. Where an explosive container is the wrong buy
A quotation hides its worst number in the price. At 980 CNY over 6 years an explosive container costs 163 CNY a year, and that rises as trips fall. Selection starts with duty cycle.
Four duties leave it exposed: one-way shipments, items longer than the 980 mm interior, under 20 trips a year, and cleanrooms above ISO 7. The first two fail on geometry, the last two on cost.
| Duty | Why it loses | Better fit |
|---|---|---|
| One-way shipment | 980 CNY serves 1 trip | Timber crate, 380 CNY |
| 1.6 m long item | Interior is 980 mm | Steel frame, open ends |
| Under 20 trips a year | 163 CNY a year unspread | Lease or share |
| Above ISO 7 | Foam outgassing, 40 min clean | Stainless, washable |
Ask three questions: trips a year, longest item, cleanliness class.
2. Small batches: the 38000 CNY tooling bill
Rotomoulded pricing splits into material, labour and tooling. The 980 CNY unit price covers the first two; tooling is billed separately at 38000 CNY against a 200 unit minimum. Spread over 200 units that is 190 CNY each, over 50 units 760 CNY — nearly the price of an explosive container again.
| Batch | Tooling share | Landed price | Lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 760 CNY | 1740 CNY | 25 days |
| 200 | 190 CNY | 1170 CNY | 20 days |
| 500 | 76 CNY | 1056 CNY | 30 days |
Ownership belongs in the contract: if the tool sits in the supplier plant, switching suppliers means paying 38000 CNY twice. Two quotes 180 CNY apart usually differ on that clause. Lead time counts too — 25 days against 3 days for a crate.
3. Short frequent loops: 12 years against 6
Put life into the formula and the ranking flips. Steel at 520 CNY over 12 years costs 43 CNY a year; an explosive container at 980 CNY over 6 years costs 163 CNY. At 240 trips a year that is 0.2 CNY a trip against 0.7 CNY.
| Item | Steel case | Explosive container |
|---|---|---|
| Unit price | 520 CNY | 980 CNY |
| Service life | 12 years | 6 years |
| Empty weight | 34 kg | 21 kg |
| Handling time | 5 min | 3 min |
| Annual upkeep | 2 repaints, 180 CNY | 1 gasket, 60 CNY |
| Annual cost | 223 CNY | 223 CNY |
The curves meet at 240 trips a year, both at 223 CNY. From there the difference moves to handling: 34 kg against 21 kg, 5 minutes against 3, or 480 minutes a year, worth 960 CNY at 120 CNY an hour.
4. Cleanrooms and static: change the material
A cleanroom judges outgassing and surface resistance, not impact strength. Foam lining sheds particles in a room running 30 air changes an hour, and a full clean takes 40 minutes; dissipative material has to land between 1 megohm and 1 gigohm.
At a 40 °C spread and 65% humidity, plain HDPE builds a charge within 30 days. On an explosive container an earth stud clears it only while stud resistance stays under 10 ohm, a figure that occupies one row of the purchase sheet and decides whether the bay can open.
Cleaning time decides too: 40 minutes for foam, 8 for stainless, 2 times a week, or 55 hours a year. Material swaps carry a volume cost: 1.5 mm stainless walls cut 12 litres from the same envelope.
5. The other way round: three rules that leave no choice
Three conditions together leave no alternative: 46 kg loaded, 4 tiers of stacking, and either 96 hours of salt spray or a 1.2 m drop.
| Test | Threshold | What fails |
|---|---|---|
| Loaded weight | above 46 kg | Timber and fabric distort |
| Stacking | 4 tiers | 190 kg on the bottom |
| Exposure | 96 h salt spray | 1.2 mm steel rusts through |
Two of the three justify an explosive container; one alone points back to the duties above. Transport volume is a fourth test: below 60% fill, freight eats the saving.
Conclusion
An explosive container pays back through trips, batch size and environment. A 50 unit batch lands at 1740 CNY, under 20 trips a year carries 163 CNY, and at 240 trips the annual cost ties with steel at 223 CNY. Run those three numbers before choosing an explosive container, not the unit price.
