Quick answer: A knife case for a machining cell, a joinery bench, a service van or a cold store differs in three numbers, not in the shell: slot pitch, latch holding force and liner grade. Count the handling moves first, then set those three.

1. Machining cells: slot pitch and reach

An operator opens a knife case more than 20 times a day, lifting 8 to 12 tool holders a shift. At a flat 25 mm pitch a 32 mm face mill will not drop in; it goes in at an angle and takes two neighbours down.

Pitch by taper instead: BT30 at 25 mm, BT40 at 34 mm, BT50 at 48 mm, with one 50 mm channel left clear.

Reach is overlooked more than pitch. A case left of the bench wants slots opening right, and the reverse on the right; backwards, the wrist turns 90 degrees, 20 times a day. A tray that lifts out whole saves 30 seconds.

2. Woodworking and regrinding: load and latch force

A cutter head weighs 1.2 kg, a set of 6 fills a knife case, and the shell adds 4.8 kg for 12 kg packed. Carrying that 200 m is fine; hanging it on a forklift for 6 hours is where the latch arithmetic changes.

Set latch holding force at 3 times the packed weight: a 12 kg case with 2 latches needs 180 N each, and the common 60 N latch pops open above 8 kg. Stacked three high, the bottom case carries 46 kg across its lid, so a flat 3 mm lid needs a cross rib.

Regrinding benches add oil. Coolant runs down the shank, and open-cell foam softens in 3 months; closed-cell at 38 kg/m³ wipes clean and holds compression set under 5%. Four bumpers keep the corners intact in a 1.2 m drop.

3. Service vans and trade shows: vibration and salt

A van bay reaches 60℃ in summer and -25℃ in winter, an 80℃ swing repeated dozens of times a year. The gasket loses rebound, and the lid feels different before it leaks.

For coastal customers on 500 hours of salt spray, hardware decides the outcome. Use 304 hinge pins and glass-filled nylon latch bodies; zinc-plated parts show white rust in 3 months.

Trade shows treat a case as consumable: eight loadings, corners against a stand edge. A moulded bumper absorbs the hit; without one a 15 mm split appears. A 110 mm grip still takes a gloved hand.

4. Cold stores and damp rooms: condensation and desiccant

Push a case from a -25℃ store into a 20℃ room and the walls bead with water inside 15 minutes. Without a desiccant bay the water reaches the slots, and the next shift finds surface rust.

Size the bay at 1/50 of internal volume: a 600×400×220 mm cavity holds 0.05 m³, so 20 g of silica gel, changed every 3 months. Four 3 mm vents keep powder in.

Specify a gasket that stays elastic at -25℃ and compress it 30%. A standard compound stiffens after 2 hours and never recovers, leaving a 0.3 mm gap that condensate finds. In a damp room, a drain plug in the base beats opening the lid to wipe it out.

Conclusion

Across four workstations the drawing changes in three lines: slot pitch by taper, latch force at three times packed weight, liner and gasket rated to the lowest site temperature. Count the handling moves and the lines write themselves, which is why a knife case is specified backwards from the work.

This article discusses only the container (case body) side of specifications and design intent, and does not cover any handling, loading or use of the contents.
