Quick answer: A Military Supply Case order is rarely won on headline price. One 480-unit enquiry: three quotes on one basis, two sampling rounds, a half-day audit, then tooling, lead time and payment.

1. The 480-Unit Military Supply Case Enquiry

In March 2026 a trading company asked four factories to quote 480 Military Supply Case units: 800 × 600 × 480 mm, 42 kg loaded, three-high stacking, 96 hours of salt spray.

Quotes came back far apart: A at CNY 268, B 302, C 341, a fourth declining. A's 268 excluded tooling, packing and ingress testing, worth 20 plus 8 plus 3 across 480 units, or 299 in real money. B carried tooling and packing but lacked a third-party test; C charged for 5 mm walls and full immersion, with complete reports.

The quantity removed A: a 500-unit minimum bills 480 as 500, the commonest cut in this trade.

2. Two Sampling Rounds to Fix the Latch Preload

B sampled at CNY 450 a piece, credited against the first invoice. The sample came in 12 days; dimensions matched, assembly did not.

With latches drawn down, pressing the lid seam showed a 0.4 mm gap breathing under the thumb. The preload was only 1.2 mm, so at 42 kg the seam opened as load shifted. The valve's 70 Shore A O-rings also seeped after four hours at -20°C.

Round two moved preload to 1.8 mm and O-rings to 60 Shore A, plus a 0.3 mm seat lip. Neither added cost; both added nine days.

Tooling was settled in the same round. A wanted a refund at 3,000 units with the mould staying in the plant; B took CNY 9,600 once, mould and drawings owned by the buyer — the only clause with real leverage at 480 units.

3. Six Things a Half-Day Factory Audit Should Cover

Half a day, no showroom, all on the floor.

  1. Mould plate: 4.5 mm steel on a three-arm rocker; under 4 mm it deflects and the wall follows.
  2. Cycle time: 28 minutes for two pieces; a quoted 18 usually means less material.
  3. Wall readings: four points at base corners and mid-wall, inside 4.3 to 4.7 mm.
  4. Hardware: one supplier for latches and hinges, 96-hour salt spray report matching the batch.
  5. Resin store: identifiable grade and lot, regrind under 15 percent.
  6. Test bay: immersion tank and drop frame in use, 1.2 m drop at 42 kg.

Item four is most often skipped: salt spray says nothing about body strength, yet it decides whether the case closes in year three.

4. Tooling, Lead Time and Payment Terms

The 42 days break down: 16 of tooling, 3 for first-article approval, 9 of production, 2 of assembly, 5 of testing including a 30-minute immersion, 2 of packing, 5 of freight.

The draft said 42 days from signing. Three origins went in: drawing approval for tooling, sample sign-off for production, balance payment for freight.

Lead time42 days from signingThree origins, 0.3% per day late
Payment50% deposit, balance before shipment40 / 50 / 10, last tenth at 30 days

Payment took the longest: the deposit covered moulds and resin, the buyer wanted 10 percent held for defects in the first 480.

5. Seven Quote Traps and the Delivery Review

The first 480 arrived; 32 sampled, 7 with preload at 0.6 mm, 2 valves seeping after -20°C. Nine replaced, debited from that final tenth.

Five of seven traps appeared here.

  1. A price excluding tooling, packing and testing: CNY 31 a unit.
  2. Wall quoted at 4.5 mm, measured at 4.0 mm, 1.6 kg lighter.
  3. Testing described as to national standard, no limits to compare.
  4. A 500-unit minimum printed on the back of the sheet.
  5. Seven-day validity that pushes you to order before drawings freeze.
  6. A tooling refund tied to volume, locking the next order to one plant.
  7. Regrind ratio left out of the annex.

Conclusion

The order went to B at CNY 302, tooling of CNY 9,600 owned by the buyer, 42 days, payment at 40/50/10. The saving was never in haggling: it was the CNY 31 gap once three quotes shared one basis, and the 0.6 mm of preload caught at sampling. Ask for a line-by-line Military Supply Case sheet first.
