Quick answer: Choose a storage box from load and stacking downward to volume, tier load, access side and environment. Reverse that order and you get boxes half empty, or lids buckling on the third tier.

1. Five Criteria for Choosing a Storage Box
Rank the criteria by what each costs when wrong, not by the order on a spec sheet. Load sets volume, stacking sets tier load and lid geometry, access sets the lid type, environment sets the resin.
Stacking is skipped most often. A storage box in a warehouse is rarely alone: four or five sit on a pallet, and the bottom one carries the rest. At 25 kg a box and four tiers, the base sees 75 kg for months, at the resin strength it has at 40 °C.
| Criterion | Check | Range | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Load | Cavity size, usable litres | 45 to 120 L | Half empty |
| Stacking | Tier load, locating pads | 25 to 40 kg | Lid collapse |
| Access | Lid direction, aisle | 800 mm or more | Jams on a wall |
| Environment | Temperature, washing | -25 to 55 °C | Cracking, ingress |
| Handling | Handles, forklift slots | 22 to 45 kg full | Two people |
2. Nominal Litres vs Usable Internal Volume
Nominal litres follow the outer profile, so usable volume is smaller. A 2.8 mm wall, a 40 mm lid depth and corner radii all take space: a 68 L storage box usually holds 58 to 62 L.
Measure the cavity, not the label: narrowest length, width and height, divided by a thousand, minus lid depth. Square corners let cartons sit flat; radiused ones drop better but waste side space.
Weight belongs in the same sum: a 45 L box holds about 22 kg, a 120 L box over 45 kg.
3. Stacking Load and How Many Tiers Hold
Tier load is the static load the bottom box carries while full, on a flat floor, evenly spread. An uneven floor takes about 20 percent off that.
Four raised pads of 8 mm or more, matched by recesses in the base, stop a stack sliding when a forklift brakes. A flat lid needs stretch wrap above two tiers.
| Tiers | Full box | Load at base | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | 25 kg | 25 kg | Flat lid |
| 4 | 25 kg | 75 kg | 8 mm pads |
| 5 | 18 kg | 72 kg | Corner posts |
| 6 | 15 kg | 75 kg | Racking |
4. Lid Type, Aisle Width and Access Side
A hinged lid seals best but needs headroom. A front opening lets someone reach in while standing, at the cost of a hinge line that collects dust. A removable lid suits tipping the box out.
Aisle width rules the choice. At 800 mm only front opening works, since a door swinging 350 mm still leaves room to pass; at 1000 mm a hinged lid clears and a removable one needs 1200 mm. Hinge life is worth asking about: eight openings a day is 15,000 over five years, and a metal bushing survives 20,000 cycles against 10,000 for plastic.
5. Temperature Range, Washing and Service Life
Ask about temperature by storage location, not shipping origin. Standard copolymer polypropylene embrittles at -10 °C; held at -25 °C for four hours and dropped, the corners crack. A low-temperature grade with the wall thickened from 2.8 mm to 3.2 mm passes, and most products stop at 55 °C.
A wash-down area changes the design. An 8 MPa lance at 300 mm drives water past the rim, so the box needs a 6 mm drain hole in the bottom corner and a removable gasket. Outdoors, without UV stabiliser the surface chalks in two years and the safe drop falls from 1.2 m to 0.6 m.
Conclusion
Five numbers settle most of it: usable cavity volume, tier load, tier count, lid headroom, temperature range. Match all five and the box goes into service; miss one and it returns as a collapsed lid or a wet pallet. A storage box is not better for being heavier, only for matching where it lives.
